January is National Radon Action Month and a Time to Focus on Your Health

January marks the beginning of a popular New Year’s resolution – getting healthy. Whether the focus is on physical health, financial health, or mental health the new year is a chance for a fresh start.

One life changing resolution that is simple and will help ensure a healthier home is to test for radon gas. It only takes a few minutes and can improve the health of family and pets in the home.

Testing for radon gas in your home

Classified as a Class A carcinogen, radon gas is the leading cause of lung cancer among people who don’t smoke and is responsible for an estimated 21,000 deaths a year. The US EPA has set an action level for indoor radon levels at 4.0 pCi/L and recommends that homes testing above this level be mitigated to reduce the radon level in the home.

To help increase awareness, January is designated as National Radon Action Month (NRAM) by the EPA. During this month radon organizations, advocacy groups, and industry professionals help spread awareness to their surrounding communities.

Radonova wants to help with increasing awareness of this cancer-causing radioactive gas by sharing ideas for what you can do:

  • Test your home for radon with an easy home test kit and tell your friends and family about it. Post it on social media. Plus, save 15% on all Radonova radon detectors throughout the month of January by using code RAM24 at check out.

  • If you are a smoker, make quitting your New Year’s resolution. Smokers who are also exposed to radon have a higher chance of developing lung cancer.

  • Contact local school system to encourage radon education at school. The EPA offers teachers a radon education curriculum for middle and high school students.

  • Ask your local school district if the school buildings have been tested for radon. Teachers and students can spend up to 10 hours per day in school buildings.

  • Schedule a time for everyone in your neighborhood to test your homes together. Mention it in your HOA communication, post it on your community Facebook page, share with your neighborhood on Nextdoor app, GroupMe, or WhatsApp.

Spreading awareness about the effects of radon and taking action can be life-saving.

Performing a radon test can be as simple as opening a plastic bag, deploying it for a set amount of time, and returning it to the lab for analysis. Or, you can contact a Certified Radon Measurement professional in your area who can perform the radon measurement for you and make recommendations about how to proceed if your radon level is high. The most important thing is to test.
